Canada’s climate places high demands on windows and doors. ENERGY STAR® certified products are independently tested and verified to meet strict energy-performance requirements for residential use in Canada.
Current ENERGY STAR® Canada criteria require residential windows and doors to achieve a maximum U-factor of 1.22 W/m²·K (0.21 Btu/h·ft²·°F) or a minimum Energy Rating (ER) of 34. Certified products must also meet air leakage requirements.
What Does the U-Factor Mean?
The U-factor measures how quickly heat passes through a window or door. A lower U-factor generally means better insulation, reduced heat loss, and improved thermal performance during colder months.
What Is the Energy Rating (ER)?
The Energy Rating combines several performance factors, including heat loss, air leakage, and solar heat gain. A higher ER generally indicates better overall energy performance.
